Identifying core values is a foundational step when it comes to live a life of alignment. Your core values represent the principles and beliefs that guide your decisions and actions. They are the fundamental aspects of life that you hold in high regard and that contribute to your sense of fulfilment and purpose. So, how exactly do you go about identifying those core values so that they are reflected in all areas of your life, be it in a generic or in a more specific way, like in your finances?
I’m a great believer that you should start at the beginning. These steps will really help you to get to know yourself better, they will clarify who you are. Just in case you are a little confused, which is normal. We live in a world where values and expectations morph and we get confused. So here goes:
Self-Reflection
- Start by engaging in deep self-reflection. Consider moments in your life when you felt genuinely fulfilled, proud, or content. Identify the activities, relationships, or achievements associated with these moments. These often point to your core values.
Clarifying Beliefs
- Take time to clarify your beliefs and principles. What matters most to you in life? It could be family, personal growth, creativity, community, or financial stability. Create a list of values that resonate with you on a personal level.
Prioritizing Values
- Not all values are of equal importance. Prioritize your list by considering which values are non-negotiable and have the most significant impact on your overall well-being. This process helps you identify the core values that should take precedence in your decision-making.
Now that you know what is really important to you, let’s see if it aligns with how you have been living your life. What I mean is, we sometimes fantasize about living a simple life, growing our own vegetables… only to realize we have been spending every single cent on designer handbags and going out to eat… that’s not in alignment. There’s a saying that goes something like this: “Show me where you spend your money and I’ll tell you what’s important to you”. So the next step is to explore your personal experiences and see if you have been living in that alignment or you need to adjust.
Significant Life Events
- Consider significant events or experiences in your life. These could be positive moments of success or challenging times that shaped your perspective. Analyze how these events align with your values and what they reveal about what truly matters to you.
Role Models
- Identify individuals you admire or consider role models. Reflect on the qualities or values in these individuals that resonate with you. Sometimes, looking at the qualities you appreciate in others can help you articulate your own core values.
Just because we fantasize about how we would love to grow our own vegetables, sometimes you realize it’s harder than you thought and you don’t enjoy it like you thought you would… true story! Being honest with yourself is very important. Also, it’s not about being influenced by others, it’s about taking it all into consideration but staying true to yourself. On that note, seeking inspiration from others will help you identify your core values. Sometimes we read something that gets us thinking, other times it’s something we heard in a conversation… don’t underestimate the power of these.
Have the conversations and read the books.
- Explore books, articles, or resources that talk about the exploration of values and purpose. Sometimes, external sources can provide insights and frameworks that assist in clarifying your own values.
- Engage in conversations with friends, family, or mentors about values and life priorities. Discussing these topics with others can offer new perspectives and help you refine your understanding of what truly matters to you.
Lastly, create your core values list. Again, be short and sweet, truthful but kind.
Articulate Values Clearly
- Once you’ve gathered insights from self-reflection and external exploration, articulate your core values clearly. Use concise language to describe each value, making it easier to reference and integrate into your decision-making process.
Review and Refine
- Regularly review and refine your list of core values. As you navigate life, your values may evolve or become clearer. It’s a dynamic process, and your ability to identify and understand your core values will deepen over time.
Identifying core values is an ongoing and introspective process that lays the groundwork for lifestyle alignment. By understanding what truly matters to you, you can shape your financial decisions, goals, and overall lifestyle to be in harmony with your authentic self. This clarity not only enhances your well-being but also serves as a guiding light in the pursuit of a purpose-driven and fulfilling life.
